Department of Mechanical Engineering

Department of Mechanical Engineering

The Department of Mechanical Engineering has been an integral part of the institute since its establishment in 1956. Beginning with an initial intake of just 30 students, the department has steadily grown over the decades, achieving several academic and research milestones. Today, it stands as a recognized center for advanced learning and globally relevant research in mechanical engineering.

The department houses a wide range of modern laboratories that support both teaching and research activities. These include facilities such as the Welding Research Cell, Internal Combustion Engine Research Cell, Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM) Laboratory, Advanced Manufacturing Technology Laboratory, and Rapid Prototyping Laboratory, among others. Together, these facilities enable hands-on learning and cutting-edge research across all academic programs. The department has secured research funding exceeding ₹8 crore from various government agencies under multiple schemes. In 2013, a Centre of Excellence in Manufacturing Sciences was established with funding from the Ministry of Human Resource Development (Government of India). In addition, the department actively provides consultancy services to industrial organizations.

With strong academic resources and extensive research opportunities, the department caters to students from the undergraduate level through doctoral studies across diverse specialization areas. It is supported by a dedicated team of 26 faculty members and 33 technical staff who mentor approximately 550 students enrolled in UG and Ph.D. programmes. The department fosters independent learning and encourages students to convert engineering challenges into opportunities for innovation and professional growth.

Faculty members maintain strong collaborations with leading universities and industries, serving as expert committee members, keynote speakers at international conferences, and reviewers or editors for reputed Scopus-indexed journals. Continuous curriculum enhancement aligned with emerging technologies remains a priority, ensuring graduates are equipped to address contemporary engineering challenges with innovative solutions.

Vision

To emerge as one of the leading mechanical engineering departments in the country by nurturing engineers who apply creativity, innovation, and technical expertise to contribute meaningfully to society.

Mission

  • To deliver strong foundational knowledge in mechanical engineering through effective and engaging teaching–learning practices.
  • To prepare graduates to address current and future engineering challenges at national and global levels.
  • To create an academic environment that encourages innovation, research, and technological advancement.
