E-Learning Centre

CIT – Centre for E-Learning

The Centre for E-Learning at Coimbatore Institute of Technology (CIT) was established following financial support sanctioned by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) in December 2016 under the E-Learning Centre for Technical Education (ELCTE) scheme. A total grant of ₹48.81 lakhs was provided to create a dedicated facility aimed at strengthening digital teaching and learning practices within the institute.

Purpose and Vision

The Centre was created to enhance the quality of education by systematically integrating Information and Communication Technology (ICT) into classroom instruction. Its core focus is to support blended learning, digital content creation, and technology-enabled pedagogy across engineering and science disciplines.

Major Initiatives and Achievements

Faculty Capacity Building

CIT regularly conducts Faculty Development Programmes (FDPs) focused on digital pedagogy and e-content creation. As part of this initiative, a five-day national-level FDP on “E-Content Design and Development” was conducted from 23rd to 27th July 2018, with active participation from faculty members across departments.

National-Level Academic Contribution

In May 2018, the Ministry of Education (formerly MHRD), Government of India, recognized CIT as a National Resource Centre (NRC). The institute was entrusted with developing Annual Refresher Programme in Teaching (ARPIT) courses through the SWAYAM platform, particularly in the domain of Structural Engineering. The Centre for E-Learning functions as the primary content production unit for these national programmes.

Digital Content Development

Faculty members, especially those handling first-year undergraduate courses, actively utilize the centre to create structured video lectures and digital learning modules.

Learner Access and Knowledge Sharing

All e-learning resources developed through the centre are shared with students to supplement classroom instruction and promote self-paced learning.

Functional Scope

The Centre supports a wide range of academic activities, including :

  • Development of high-quality e-content to enhance student understanding and engagement
  • Creation of a growing digital repository for Science and Engineering subjects
  • Production of MOOCs for nationwide faculty training through the SWAYAM platform

Infrastructure and Technical Capabilities

The Centre is equipped with a professional studio and advanced instructional technology, including:

  • Video Systems: Full HD recording systems (1080p at 60 fps), 4K interactive display, and interactive pen displays
  • Audio Systems: Wireless microphones, studio-grade headphones, speakers, and digital audio mixers
  • Presentation & Editing Tools: Smart lectern, LED display units, HD audio-video switchers, and high-performance workstations with professional editing software
