Research Policy

Building on its legacy of technical excellence, Coimbatore Institute of Technology (CIT) has established a robust Research Promotion Policy designed to nurture a world-class innovation ecosystem. The policy reflects the institute's commitment to transforming theoretical knowledge into impactful technological solutions and high-quality intellectual property.

Overview of Research Promotion Policy

The CIT Research Promotion Policy aims to foster and sustain excellence in research and innovation across all engineering and scientific disciplines. It encourages faculty and students to break new ground in technological applications, institutional capabilities, and the formulation of public policies.

The institute creates a research-friendly environment by:

  • Encouraging Practical Problem-Solving: Students are motivated to learn through hands-on projects in collaboration with different departments and faculty mentors.
  • Interdisciplinary Focus: Faculty and students are urged to involve themselves in multi-disciplinary and translational research to find solutions for 21st-century global challenges.
  • Infrastructure Support: Providing state-of-the-art laboratory facilities and seed funding to kick-start innovative research projects.

Financial Incentives and Support Schemes

To maintain a high standard of academic output, CIT offers a comprehensive incentive structure for faculty and researchers who achieve significant milestones:

1. Publication Incentives

Cash awards are provided for research papers published in reputable, peer-reviewed journals:

  • High-Impact Journals: Additional incentives are provided for papers published in journals with an impact factor greater than 5.
  • Collaborative Research: Special bonuses are awarded for papers co-authored with premier national institutions (like IITs and IISc) or top-ranked international universities.
  • Scopus/Web of Science: Tiered cash prizes are awarded based on authorship position (First, Second, or Third author) for indexed publications.

2. Seed Money and Fellowships

  • Seed Funding: Faculty members can receive grants up to ₹5 Lakhs from the management to carry out initial research and establish proof of concept.
  • Research Fellowships: Qualified research scholars are eligible for a fellowship of ₹20,000 per month for up to three years, with additional stipends for those with valid GATE scores.

3. Professional Development Grants

  • Conference Travel: CIT provides international and national travel grants to enable faculty and students to present their research findings at global conferences.
  • h-index Awards: Faculty members whose research contributions lead to an increase in their h-index are recognized with annual cash prizes.

Consultancy and Industry Interaction

CIT actively promotes a culture of consultancy by encouraging departments to utilize their expertise and institutional infrastructure for industry-sponsored projects.

  • Incentive Sharing: A unique 40:60 ratio is maintained for sharing consultancy revenue between the institution and the individual/team involved.
  • Technology Transfer: The policy emphasizes converting research studies into commercially viable products through patenting and industry collaboration.

Governance and Ethical Standards

The research activities at CIT are governed by a strict code of ethics and a statutory framework:

  • Statutory Compliance: Research and IPR management are aligned with the Statutory Declaration under Section 4(1)(b) of the RTI Act, 2005, ensuring full transparency.
  • Administrative Oversight: All major research policies and progress reports are reviewed and approved by the Institutional Research Board and the Governing Body, which includes members from Anna University and the State Government.
  • Ethical Integrity: Researchers are required to follow ethical principles specified by UGC and AICTE, ensuring quality, integrity, and the avoidance of plagiarism in all scholarly work.
