National Innovation and Startup Policy (NISP) at CIT

Coimbatore Institute of Technology has implemented the National Innovation and Startup Policy (NISP) for students and faculty as advocated by the Ministry of Education’s Innovation Cell. The policy provides a structured framework to nurture innovation, encourage entrepreneurial thinking, and facilitate the translation of academic research and ideas into viable products, services, and enterprises.

Through NISP, CIT seeks to foster an innovation-driven campus culture that empowers students and faculty to move beyond conventional employment pathways and actively engage in venture creation, technology development, and societal problem-solving.

  • Startup and Incubation Enablement
To provide access to physical infrastructure, laboratories, technical expertise, and structured mentoring for early-stage ventures.
  • Academic Flexibility for Entrepreneurs
To support student innovators through flexible academic provisions, including semester breaks or gap periods, enabling sustained focus on startup development without academic disadvantage.
  • Dedicated Resource Allocation
To earmark institutional funding and facilities for innovation, prototyping, and entrepreneurship-related activities.
  • Faculty and Mentor Incentives
To recognize and encourage faculty engagement in mentoring startups, translational research, and technology commercialization.

Support Mechanisms for Students and Faculty

To ensure ease of participation and continuity in entrepreneurial pursuits, the policy provides the following institutional support :

  • Startup Registration Support
Eligible student and faculty startups may use the institute’s address for official registration during the incubation period.
  • Product Development and Prototyping
Innovators are granted controlled access to Centres of Excellence, specialized laboratories, and advanced equipment for design, testing, and validation.
  • Equity and Revenue Framework
Clearly defined models govern equity participation and revenue sharing between innovators and the institution, ensuring fairness and long-term sustainability.
  • Mentorship and Industry Connect
Regular engagement with experienced alumni entrepreneurs, industry professionals, and startup ecosystem stakeholders is facilitated through structured forums.
  • Academic Credit Integration
Students may earn academic credits for innovation-led projects and startup activities as part of elective or project requirements, subject to academic regulations.

Institutional Innovation Council (IIC)

The Institutional Innovation Council functions as the nodal body for implementing NISP initiatives at CIT. Its key activities include :

  • Organizing innovation challenges, ideation contests, and hackathons to identify promising ideas
  • Conducting design thinking and entrepreneurship development programmes
