About the Department of Mathematics

Established in 1956, the Department of Mathematics has been a foundational pillar of the Institute since its inception. The department plays a central role in supporting academic programs across the campus by delivering rigorous mathematical education to students at the undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral levels. Its teaching and research contributions extend across disciplines, including science, engineering, and the humanities.

Center for Advanced Research and Scholarship

Center for Advanced Research and Scholarship

Research forms a core strength of the department. The doctoral programme is designed to integrate theoretical mathematics with engineering and applied sciences, fostering interdisciplinary inquiry and innovation. Faculty members and research scholars are actively engaged in a wide spectrum of research areas, such as:

Core and Applied Mathematics: Topology, fluid mechanics, and control systems

Computational and Data Sciences: Data analytics, web mining, cloud-based computing, and information privacy

Mathematical Systems and Modeling: Fuzzy systems, optimization techniques, and queuing models

Emerging and Interdisciplinary Fields: Mathematical epidemiology and ethnomathematics

The department’s research excellence is evidenced by the successful completion of three externally funded projects supported by UGC and NBHM. Since its inception, the doctoral programme has produced 27 Ph.D. graduates, with an additional nine research scholars currently pursuing their doctoral studies under faculty supervision.

Vision

To be a center of excellence in mathematical education and inquiry, bridging the gap between abstract mathematical theory and real-world applications. We envision a future where our graduates and researchers drive scientific and technological breakthroughs by harnessing the power of logical reasoning, advanced modeling, and innovative computational techniques.

Mission

The Department of Mathematics is committed to:

Integrated Education: Providing a robust mathematical foundation for students across all engineering, science, and humanities disciplines to enhance their analytical and problem-solving capabilities.

Research Innovation: Cultivating a high-impact research environment that encourages exploration in both fundamental areas like Topology and Fluid Dynamics, and emerging fields such as Cloud Computing and Mathematical Epidemiology.

Academic Leadership: Empowering scholars through advanced doctoral programs and international collaborations to produce globally recognized research that contributes to the advancement of Mathematical and Applied Sciences.

Societal Contribution: Applying mathematical optimization and logic to address complex societal challenges, ranging from privacy preservation in data mining to the modeling of biological and industrial systems.
