The Department of Civil Engineering at CIT is one of our founding pillars, established in 1956. Our academic programs have expanded significantly since then, covering the full spectrum of advanced study:
Post Graduate:
- Structural Engineering began in 1969.
- Ph.D. Research in Civil Engineering was launched in 1978.
- We introduced Environmental Engineering in 2005.
- Construction Management commenced in 2011.

B.E. Civil Engineering
We’ve built a very high level of expertise across several essential sub-disciplines, specifically:
Structural Engineering: Our capabilities cover the full spectrum of the field. We handle everything from the initial Structural Analysis and Design phases all the way to high-level Structural Optimization.
The backbone of our department is a remarkable team of faculty members, each contributing a wealth of both deep academic knowledge and hands-on industrial experience in critical engineering and technology fields.
Our faculty and students work proactively, focusing their efforts on meeting the construction industry's immediate demands while continually sharpening their specialized skills within the field of Civil Engineering.
Infrastructure Foundations and Advanced Materials:
- Our knowledge base is quite extensive, covering both niche materials and modern construction techniques. We make it a point to bridge the gap between material science and practical site application.

This includes a deep technical grasp of Prestressed Concrete Structures, staying current with the evolving
principles of Concrete Technology, and the successful, hands-on design of Steel Structures.
Infrastructure Stability:
- We make it a priority to guarantee long-term infrastructure resilience and unhindered transit.
- Our faculty and students demonstrate excellence in the critical fields of Earthquake Engineering and Transportation Engineering. These skills truly form the foundation of everything we do.

Environmental Planning:
- We provide an in-depth understanding of Environmental Engineering, giving special attention to the critical, non-negotiable step of anticipating and identifying the likely environmental impact of any planned construction.
- We significantly boost this assessment capability by regularly using Remote Sensing technology to generate exceptionally accurate and detailed resource maps.
- When this technical and environmental knowledge is paired with our demonstrated expertise in Construction Management, it ensures that every project is completed successfully, on budget, and exactly when expected.
Program Recognition and Approval
Every academic offering at the Coimbatore Institute of Technology holds formal approval from the AICTE (All India Council for Technical Education). Demonstrating our adherence to the highest quality benchmarks, our principal programs achieved significant accreditation in 2019:
