Department of Humanities: Nurturing Professional and Personal Growth
Founded in 1957, the Department of Humanities plays a crucial role in complementing technical education with the human and professional skills required in todayβs competitive world. The department recognizes that technical knowledge alone is not sufficient for success; effective communication, leadership abilities, critical thinking, and cultural awareness are equally essential for engineers and professionals operating in a global environment.
A Structured Approach to Communication and Skill Development
The academic framework of the department is designed to support students at every stage of their academic journey. All first-year students enrolled in B.E., B.Tech., and M.Sc. programmes receive comprehensive instruction in Technical and Professional English to build a strong communication foundation. As students advance, focused language and skill-based training is offered to MCA students, along with dedicated courses on Employability and Soft Skills during the second and third years of study.
To encourage intellectual diversity and broader learning, the department offers a wide range of electives under the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS), including:
- Foreign Language Studies: Introductory and intermediate courses in German and French
- Literature and Academic Skills: Courses such as English for Academic Purposes, Life and Literature, and English for Competitive Examinations
- Management and Economic Studies: Subjects covering Industrial Economics, Principles of Management, and Contemporary Issues in the Indian Economy
International Collaborations and Professional Certifications
The Department of Humanities maintains strong academic and industry partnerships that enhance global exposure and professional readiness:
- British Council Collaboration: Since 2004, the department has partnered with the British Council to offer the internationally recognized Business English Certificate (BEC), with the institute serving as an authorized examination center. Additionally, an IELTS partnership enables students to access free online coaching and preparation resources.
- Industry Collaboration with Sutherland Global Services: In association with Sutherland, the department delivers focused training programmes on interview techniques, group communication, phonetics, and workplace communication for both students and faculty members.
- International Academic Engagement: The department has established a Memorandum of Understanding with Jishnou University, China, facilitating faculty exchange programmes and collaborative research in management-related projects.
Academic Contributions and Professional Development
The department remains actively engaged in academic advancement through the organization of national and international conferences. Under the TEQIP Phase II initiative alone, it has successfully conducted eight Faculty Development Programmes and more than thirty student-oriented workshops aimed at enhancing employability skills and professional competence.
