Department of Chemistry: A Tradition of Academic Progress

Department of Chemistry: A Tradition of Academic Progress

The Department of Chemistry at Coimbatore Institute of Technology has been an integral part of the institution since its establishment in 1956. In its formative years, the department was shaped under the guidance of its first Head, Dr. D. Nageswara Rao, whose leadership over nearly forty years laid a strong foundation for teaching and research excellence. Building on this legacy, the department is presently led by Dr. E. P. Subramaniam, who assumed charge in 2019 and continues to guide its academic and research initiatives.

The department is supported by a team of eight experienced faculty members whose collective expertise spans multiple domains of chemistry. This breadth enables the department to deliver instruction for core undergraduate engineering programmes such as B.E. and B.Tech., while also supporting advanced academic and research degrees including M.Phil. and Ph.D. programmes.

Academic Growth and Programme Development

To remain aligned with scientific advancements and educational demands, the department has steadily broadened its academic portfolio over the decades:

  • 1956: Introduction of General Chemistry courses for undergraduate engineering programmes
  • 1972: Commencement of the B.Sc. programme in Applied Sciences
  • 1986: Launch of the M.Phil. programme in Applied Chemistry
  • 1990: Expansion into postgraduate and doctoral education with the introduction of the M.Sc. in Applied Chemistry and the Ph.D. programme

This progressive development reflects the department’s commitment to continuous academic enhancement.

Vision

To emerge as a center of academic and research excellence in chemical sciences, cultivating professionals who possess deep-rooted scientific knowledge, innovative thinking, and a commitment to environmental sustainability and societal progress.

Mission

  • Academic Rigor: To impart high-quality education in chemistry and applied sciences through a curriculum that balances theoretical foundations with advanced industrial and research applications.
  • Research Leadership: To promote cutting-edge research in emerging areas such as Nanomaterials, Green Chemistry, and Energy Materials, contributing to global scientific advancements.
  • Skill Development: To equip students with precise analytical and practical skills through state-of-the-art laboratory training, enabling them to offer innovative solutions to complex engineering problems.
  • Social Responsibility: To inculcate ethical values and environmental consciousness, preparing students to lead sustainable developments that benefit the nation and the global community.

Research Excellence, Funding, and Professional Engagement

Beyond classroom teaching, the department actively participates in research and professional development activities. It regularly organizes faculty development programmes and workshops sponsored by AICTE and TEQIP, addressing contemporary scientific and technological challenges such as renewable energy systems, biofuel technologies, corrosion mitigation, and applications of nanoscience in biotechnology.

The quality and relevance of the department’s research efforts are demonstrated by the competitive research funding received from national agencies, including DST–SERB and AICTE. At present, seven full-time research scholars are engaged in innovative investigations in areas such as:

  • Nanomaterials and Solar Energy: Advancing materials for high-efficiency energy conversion technologies
  • Environmental and Biological Applications: Exploring sustainable chemical solutions and biologically relevant chemical systems
